CENSUS TAKERS

Conveyed by a Volcano Census Taker ...

"Census folks will soon be circling every block of Puna and Ka'u, usually alone on foot (and forbidden to carry dog spray). We are only mapping human dwellings at this point, so we won't be asking much beyond street addresses and whether there are additional dwellings to send a census to.

Please kokua! We are your neighbors, and the census doesn't share data with any other agency EVER, so we can't cost you money. We will carry visible name tags and little computers to enter addresses with, and our briefcases and possibly vehicle signs also identify us as census workers. We are supposed to knock on your door to explain why we're there and hand you a form explaining our work. If you don't answer, we should be on our way within a few seconds. (We are supposed to look for extra entrances or other signs of separate habitation, in case we seem niele.)

Citizens are required by law to give this information, and it is in our interest to be counted in order to get the government services and political representation we deserve. This census has been shaping America since 1790, and Hawaii can only keep up with its growth if it knows where more services are needed. Perhaps Ocean View will get a school, or all of us will benefit from an additional representative in Congress. So please be kind to your census workers, and be counted!"

Calling all early birds and night birds ... if you're out and about for a little exercise, keep your eyes and ears open for criminals and coqui.
Thanks, Bruce, for the great suggestion!

Notice to all subdivisions and neighborhoods in Volcano

For future reference, when you want to notify Volcano-NHW of an incident, please do so by clicking the link in the upper right hand corner of this page. It behooves each subdivision or large neighborhood to nurture a candidate who can represent its specific needs, while the website will continue to publish data for all to see.

Willing representatives are encouraged to contact Tom Young.

We have lots of new residents in Volcano! Old timers please get to know the newcomers and welcome them. Getting to know your neighbors is the key. Phone numbers and back up numbers are important for your neighbors to have.

The next request is to the skateboarders. Until Hawaii State legislation is passed w/ safety rules to follow and proper equipment, skateboards should not be ridden on the roads. Please be aware and carry your board to the skate park.

If you are following a criminal case and don’t have criminal report number, contact the original investigator, the policeman who took the report, and ask for a number and update. You may also call the Criminal Investigation Section in Hilo. Give the criminal report number.
